MS Access DB & Dreamweaver 8?

Hello,

I created an Access Database and I%26#039;m using DW8 as my web authoring tool. I was able to make a connection to the database with DW and even created recordsets, but when I try to preview the .ASP page I created with the dynamic content using the testing server , nothing displays. I%26#039;m using Apache for the Web Server. I uploaded the page and the DB to my hosting server to see if it was something with my PC, but the same thing occurs online.

First a little advice. Post your code it helps troubleshoot the issue.

If you are using apache, my advice is to switch to MySQL. You can export your Access database to a comma seperated value and then import it into MySQL. There are some MySQL gui engines that are very similar to SQL Server Enterprise Edition.

It could be your connection string or the way you are opening and closing the connection. If you are running this on Linux, you might find PHP easier to use.

Make sure you use server.createobject to make your ado connection to the database and recordset.

What is the easiest way to upload files & maintain my new website?

I%26#039;m new at this... and I%26#039;m using go daddy as a host. I want to upload a simple one page file which is already set up in HTML.

Which of these is best for me? Should I create a network connection using my Windows XP? Or should I use Go daddy hosting control center web-based FTP client? Or what do you suggest?

If GoDaddy has a web based FTP client and you don%26#039;t plan on transferring a lot of files that often, I%26#039;d use that. CuteFTP is also a great FTP client, http://www.cuteftp.com/, but it does cost $40.

I would also suggest trying http://www.cyberultra.net/hosting.php next time you renew your hosting. Much less expensive than GoDaddy, $40 for a year. I%26#039;ve been with them for years. They%26#039;re very reliable.

"500 Internal Error"?

I host my web site at atspace.com, which is free and bannerless, (no ads), but recently when I try to visit my site, instead of my index page I get a page that says %26quot;500 Internal Error%26quot;. What does that mean? What causes it and most importantly, how do I correct it? Is something wrong with my computer, or does everyone who tries to visit my site get the same error message? I%26#039;ve never use a free host before, but if this is typical of their service I%26#039;d just as soon pay for a reliable host. Can anybody answer my question? Thanks.

500 is the generic error.

Usually, it happens when you%26#039;re using some sort of CGI or script, and the script has some sort of error (syntax, etc.). It can also happen with a mis-configured webserver.

The first thing to do would be to check the error logs for the web server. But since you%26#039;re using a free host, I doubt you%26#039;ve access to them.

Basicly, contact the people that administer the server and ask what%26#039;s up. They may be able to help.

If you changed anything recently, you might want to change it back, just in case...

Is yahoo mail beta hacked or just me, help?

I%26#039;ve had problems with Beta recently, and have reverted back to Classic. try this:

My work-around is to use the old classic Yahoo Mail until it is fixed.

Log out of all Yahoo sites.

Go to this site:

That should put you into a login screen. Login, and it will then put you into the Beta introductory offer.

Click %26quot;No thanks, remind me later%26quot; and that should get your account to revert back to Yahoo Mail %26quot;classic%26quot;.

Windows NT or Ubuntu?

I have a Dell Poweredge 2450 server (dual 600 cpus, 2gbs ram, 3 18gbs hdd) and plan to use it to host some simple web sites which will include php pages. Which operating system should I go with? Windows NT Server or Ubuntu 7.04 Server? Any reason for your pick? Thanks.

Windows NT or Ubuntu?

The decision should be based on your ability to get drivers for the Dell running Ubuntu 7.04. Besides, other services that need to run running a web page could be problematical as well.

However, running Ubuntu does solve the spyware and virus crap.

Running Windows NT will be much easier to set up - however - I do not believe Microsoft has supported NT for quite a while.

If you are looking for a stable and secure Server, go with Ubuntu 7.04 The reason in my experience is Linux doesn%26#039;t have the crashing and hanging up problems associated with every thing Microsoft related. It%26#039;s just a much better system for Servers.

My first home page ever was hosted on Geocities. It was placed in /SiliconValley subdirectory for sure, created sometimes in year 1997 maybe 1998. I know that it is surely deleted from any storages, but maybe I can manage to find some %26quot;snippets%26quot; of my page in search engine indexes. I%26#039;ve already tried archive.org, however I don%26#039;t remember exactly the URL of my very first page :-) It was something like http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/#...

Yes, I do this pretty much everyday.

First, you need to set it up in DW (Dreamweaver). Here%26#039;s how:

If you have NOT defined your local copy of the site in DW:

Site %26gt; New Site

Enter in your info. (WHat you want to call your site, where all the files will be, images directory, etc.)

Then, on the left %26quot;Category%26quot; side, click %26quot;remote info%26quot;. Go to the %26quot;Advanced%26quot; tab and on the drop down choose %26quot;FTP%26quot;

your ftp host is: www.yoursitename.com

(of course, change yoursitename with the domain name you purchased from godaddy or whereever)

Leave %26quot;Host Directory%26quot; blank and enter in your godaddy login information. (your godaddy username and password).

I have %26quot;Maintain Synchronization%26quot; and %26quot;Save%26quot; checked and nothing else.

Then, test connection with the %26quot;Test%26quot; button. It should connect and say %26quot;Macromedia connected successfully.%26quot; Click %26quot;Ok%26quot; on that tab and %26quot;Ok%26quot; on the Remote Info thing.

Then, all you need to do is synchronize your local copy with your %26quot;remote%26quot; godaddy copy.

For this, go to your %26quot;Files%26quot; panel. First you need to connect by clicking the %26quot;electric plug/socket%26quot; like icon (the first one on there). Then you need to synchronize by clicking the %26quot;Expand to show remote and local files%26quot; icon (the very last one).

Then, on the new screen that shows up, there is a green recycle like icon on top that says %26quot;Synchronize%26quot; and wallah, your sites will be synchronized. Get and Put are pretty self-explanatory.
