Child porn ring uncovered in Austria By VERONIKA OLEKSYN, Associated Press Writer
Wed Feb 7, 7:08 AM ET
VIENNA, Austria - Austrian authorities said Wednesday they have uncovered a major international child pornography ring involving more than 2,360 suspects from 77 countries, including hundreds in the United States, who paid to view videos of young children being sexually abused.

The children were under the age of 14 and screams could be heard, said Harald Gremel, an Austrian police expert on Internet crime who headed the investigation.
Interior Minister Guenther Platter said the FBI was investigating about 600 of the suspects in the United States. German authorities were following leads on another 400 people, France was looking into about 100 others, and at least 23 suspects were Austrians, he said.
Platter said videos downloaded from the Internet and seized by Austria%26#039;s Federal Criminal Investigations Bureau included images that showed %26quot;the worst kind of child sexual abuse.%26quot;
Gremel said %26quot;girls could be seen being raped, and you could also hear screams.%26quot; Although officials initially said the children ranged in ages from %26quot;0 to 14,%26quot; Gremel later said no infants were seen in the videos.
No Austrian suspects were yet in custody, authorities said, adding that they shared their information with law enforcement in other countries in hopes that suspects could be investigated and charged. Gremel said he could not provide details about investigations outside Austria, but noted that cooperation with Russian authorities had intensified over the past two weeks.
The investigation began in July when a man working for a Vienna-based Internet file hosting service approached authorities at the Interior Ministry to say he noticed the pornographic material during a routine check, Gremel said.
The man blocked access to the videos while recording the I.P. addresses of people who continued to try to download the material, and gave the details to authorities. Neither the man nor the Vienna company were identified, and police said neither was implicated in the case.
Within a 24-hour period, investigators recorded more than 8,000 hits from 2,361 computer I.P. addresses in 77 countries ranging from Algeria to South Africa, Gremel told reporters.
The videos were posted on a Russian Web site, and users had to pay $89 to access the material, Gremel said.
He said investigators believed the videos, which included images of girls and boys up to age 14, were made in Eastern Europe and uploaded to the site from somewhere in Britain.
Germany had the largest single number of suspects in Europe, Gremel said.

Have You Read This?? Isnt it just Horrible??
I read this and I%26#039;m absolutely sickened by it. Nothing is going to be done to stop this, you know. There is an evil current in this world and these devils do whatever they like, without any reprisals from anyone. After a few more shock treatments in the media, this horror will get swept under the rug, like the rest of the filth in our society. Our children will continue to be brutalized and nobody will do a damn thing about it. This is the problem with the masses: they sit back and wait for somebody else to do what they should do themselves. Yes, I%26#039;m sickened!
Have You Read This?? Isnt it just Horrible??
That is horrible and it makes me sick that there are people out there who would do something like that, video tape it and then turn around and sell it to make money. They should all get arrested, and while they%26#039;re in jail, have them get raped by their cellmates and have it video taped and then the guards can sell those tapes on the internet. People need to start handing out aggressive punishments and this will stop happening.
Other Replys:Child molesters are the lowest form of human beings. In prison they%26#039;re known as %26quot;short eyes%26quot; are hated by the rest of the prison population.
Other Replys:that is terrible
Other Replys:Whats really disgusting is the jail terms for these people!! Two years is what the sick f**kers who downloaded the images will get!
David Irvine was given four years in prison in Austria for claiming the Holocaust never happened (jailed for writing a book!!), and while I think he%26#039;s full of sh*t, I don%26#039;t think he deserves jail time, certainly not more jail time than a pedophile!!
Surely someone possessing child porn deserves a longer sentence!! The people who produced the material will only get 10 years in jail!! I%26#039;m so sick of non-violent, non-sexual crimes getting harsh sentences, while these sick b*stards get out of jail early!! This is how Europeans go about things. They have loads of pedophiles walking the streets yet they prosecute shop owners who sell golywog dolls (an old fashioned blackface doll).
Then again, in America you can get jailed longer for selling a bag of weed than raping a child. I wonder--who would you rather your kids meet--a drug dealer or a pedophile?
I could care less what some guy thinks about the holocaust (it%26#039;s his opinion, not mine), he isn%26#039;t going to molest my kids. I care alot more about how safe my children are to walk down the street. Pity the Austrian govt doesn%26#039;t see it that way.
Other Replys:yes horrible indeed.
